Job Description:
An opportunity to direct developmental and college level reading at a premier community college in an increasingly multi-cultural community. Primary responsibilities include establishing reading instruction systems and processes, developing and modifying courses and curriculum, providing instruction in reading, and working with faculty colleagues to include reading instruction in their courses. This also includes:
Based on student needs, develop, maintain and communicate curriculum and course goals, objectives and outcomes.
Develop, refine and modify course syllabi in reading and college survival skills.
Review placement cut scores and ensure appropriate alignment to courses.
Collaborate with faculty to develop strategies that incorporate reading reinforcement and assignments in courses throughout the curriculum.
Work with the Learning Center to establish student support mechanisms that develop and reinforce reading and study skills,
Select, develop and evaluate adjunct faculty in the reading and college survival skills course areas to ensure they have appropriate knowledge and skills and that curriculum and course goals are achieved.
Ensure reading course materials and methods are current and effective.
Participate in areas of divisional responsibility such as proposing programs and exhibiting leadership in their implementation; participate on committees in an effective and timely manner; work with other faculty to accomplish the goals of the discipline, division, and college.
Contribute to the governance of the College through active service on committees; participate in faculty orientation sessions, professional development seminars, and activities to enhance professional development.
Qualifications:
Academic Credentials: Academic Credentials: A master's degree in Reading, Literacy, Education/Teaching with a concentration in reading, or other similarly focused degree programs.
Academic Preparedness: A current and comprehensive knowledge of reading providing a foundation for effective teaching and learning must be demonstrated by participation in professional associations, papers, recognition, awards, recent teaching, research, or professional development.
Experiential Background: Relevant experience and demonstrated up-to-date skills teaching adults to read.
Written/Verbal Presentation Skills: Documented or demonstrated skills or experience that verify professional teaching and communication ability.
Technological Proficiency: Knowledge of computer-supported, assisted, or based instruction and the demonstrated ability to integrate, as appropriate, into instructional practice.*
Curricular Development: Knowledge of relevant curriculum development and demonstrated ability to design or revise curricula to maintain relevancy and meet changing needs.
Assessment: Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to assess learning outcomes and use results to inform student, course, and curriculum decisions.
Learning Theory and Practice: Knowledge of concepts and practices promoting effective teaching and learning.
Pedagogical Flexibility: Knowledge of a variety of pedagogical tools to enhance learning by students with varying backgrounds and learning styles.
Community College Mission: Knowledge of, or commitment to learn, the unique missions of the comprehensive community college and its place in higher education.*
Shared Governance: Knowledge of the concepts and practices of academic governance including employee involvement and individual accountability.*
*This standard may be waived at the time of hire, but the newly hired teacher will be required to prepare a plan with the teacher's supervisor designed to achieve the standard by the end of the probationary period.
