Description

The Wayne County Veterans Services Division assists honorably discharged wartime and peacetime veterans and their families in obtaining various benefits and services. The division offers temporary emergency financial assistance to eligible veterans, their spouses, and dependent children to help meet immediate needs. The division also offers funeral expense assistance toward burial benefits and installing a government marker for eligible veterans.

The Assistant Division Director of Veterans Services serves as a key outreach coordinator and supports administrative processes across the division. Key duties include planning and executing strategic outreach to veterans' associations and organizations, overseeing the coordination of outreach activities and services to assist veterans. This role involves supporting strategic planning, project management, and ensuring the effective delivery of services to veterans and their families.

Required Tasks:

  • Community Outreach: The Assistant Division Director will support the Division Director in expanding outreach and community engagement with the veteran community to understand their needs, promote available services, and gather feedback for continuous improvement. This role will focus on strategic outreach to ensure high visibility and engagement in Wayne County, focusing on Detroit, Ecorse, River Rouge, and Inkster.
  • Project Management: The Assistant Division Director will oversee the mobile unit office and ensure that scheduling and staffing are planned and implemented. They will also ensure that all processes and workflows are working efficiently and effectively. They will monitor the mobile unit's reach and report on its impact.
  • Partnership and Collaboration: The Assistant Division Director is responsible for planning and coordinating the Veterans Services collaborative. Work closely with other departments, agencies, and community organizations to plan meetings, coordinate services and resources, and advocate for veterans' interests.
  • Communication and Reporting: Maintain open and transparent communication with department leadership and staff. Prepare and present reports on project updates, including procurement activities. Relationships with key stakeholders, including veterans' organizations and community leaders. Effective written and verbal communication, analytical, reporting, interpersonal, counseling, directing, leadership, problem identification, and problem solving.

Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • An Associates Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Health, Sociology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or a related field required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in administrative leadership roles, preferably in government, community organizing, community and program development, social services.
  • Honorable Discharged Military Veteran with 3-5 years' experience dealing with veteran issues and advocacy on behalf of veterans and their dependents preferred.
  • Experience in personnel management, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluation.
