Purpose/Description


Bridge Workers are responsible for performing maintenance on structures and attenuators. They perform bridge scaling, install and repair false decking, shore up holes in bridge surfaces, saw, cut and hammer using torches, disassemble and assemble fender panels, repair bridge joints and install temporary supports. Bridge Workers operate equipment including lift trucks and dump trucks.

Required Knowledge

  • Building and Construction Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of structures such as highways and roads.

Required Tasks

  • Major Duties:
  • Perform maintenance on bridges and attenuators.
  • Perform scaling on bridges, install and maintain false decking, shore up holes, repair holes in bridge decks.
  • Saw cut hammer spots, repair joints, and install temporary supports.
  • Perform attenuator work such as using torches, assemble and disassemble fender panels and diaphragms and cartridges.
  • Use power tools to repair concrete median walls and install guard rail.
  • Clean out sumps of pump houses.
  • Operate lift trucks and dump trucks, working from lifts.
  • Climb ladders - working at heights.
  • Use torches and welders.
  • Sweep and shovel materials.
  • Other duties:
  • Record work.
  • Lay out and place steel.
  • Build form work.
  • Preform general cleaning duties of buildings and properties.
  • Maintain a safe and acceptable driving records (no more than 7 points)
  • Other related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Specific types of tools utilized
  • Lubricate equipment to allow proper functioning.
  • Maintain work equipment or machinery.
  • Repair structural components.
  • Replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts.

Educational Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or its equivalent; AND
  • A valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "A" designation and "N" designation (including airbrake test); AND

Experience Requirements

  • At least one (1) year full-time paid experience working in the construction industry maintaining and repairing structures or equipment; AND
  • An acceptable safe driving record - No more than 7 points.
  • Candidates must, within the first four (4) months of their probationary period, obtain an "N" endorsement. If the CDL endorsement is not obtained, the employee will be removed from the Bridge Worker position pursuant to the Department of Personnel/Human Resources and Department of Public Services' procedures.
