Purpose/Description

The Accounting Technician 1 performs moderately difficult bookkeeping and complex work involving the application of bookkeeping principles to a variety of common transactions. Duties include: balancing subsidiary records, revenues and expenses; processing vouchers for payment; maintaining complicated case accounts; auditing basic bookkeeping records or assisting in more difficult audits; and reviewing and preparing financial statements and reports.

Required Tasks

  • Process purchase order and service voucher payments for multiple departments.
  • Research and resolve invoicing discrepancies.
  • Operate computers programmed with accounting software to record, store, and analyze information.
  • Check figures, postings, and documents for correct entry, mathematical accuracy, and proper codes.
  • Classify, record, and summarize numerical and financial data to compile and keep financial records, using journals and ledgers or computers.
  • Receive, record, and bank cash, checks, and vouchers.
  • Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Compile statistical, financial, accounting, or auditing reports and tables pertaining to such matters as cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses.
  • Reconcile or note and report discrepancies found in records.
  • Opening incoming mail, date stamp and sort the mail for distributions.
  • Answer incoming calls and assisting customers.
  • Prepare vendor files for archiving by boxing, logging, and labeling files for shipping to storage facility.
  • Retrieve and copy files for departments and auditors.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.

Candidates may be considered for higher level positions based on additional years of experience.

TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS

A Written assessment (100%) will be administered covering knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices, knowledge of Excel and related knowledges. Online virtual testing and testing at the Guardian Building is available.

Candidates must pass all tests in order to be placed on the eligibility list.

In the event that the number of eligible applicants is equal to or less than the number required for certification, the Department of Personnel/Human Resources may substitute for the above tests an evaluation of experience and training or other such tests as the Department may deem desirable to determine the competence of the applicants for appointment.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this examination is to establish an eligibility list from which to fill present and future vacancies. The eligibility list will remain in effect for one (1) year.

This is a continuous examination and ranking on the eligible list will be subject to change as names are added to and removed from the list.

GENERAL INFORMATION

How to Apply: The application may be used both for determining admission to the examination and for rating experience and training. Applicants will be notified by mail of the time and place of the examination. Section 5 (b) of Rule 6 of the Rules of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources provides that persons denied permission to compete in an examination may make a written appeal to the Wayne County Civil Service Commission for a final decision within twenty (20) days following the mailing of such notification, stating the basis on which it is felt that their application should be accepted.
